Site-specific drawings · 2023 · Svalbard and the Arctic Circle

Made during The Arctic Circle residency in 2023, these works fall into two categories: drawings made with rocks on rocks — using stones from the site as both implement and surface, leaving marks that echo the geological processes that formed them — and found drawings: marks already made by the place itself.
Found drawings include the scoring left by glacial movement, frost-heave patterns in permafrost, branching cracks in basalt, lichen growth forms, salt-crystal deposits, and the impressions of bone and shell in sediment. These are images the Arctic has made over millennia, discovered and documented rather than authored.
Together, the made drawings and found drawings form a dialogue between human mark-making and geological time — a conversation about what it means to draw with a landscape rather than of it. The works are made in places now uncovered by retreating glaciers, exposing rock surfaces that have not seen light for thousands of years.
