I had the honor of presenting this lecture to the annual meeting of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators in Olympia, WA. In it, I look at the basics of how images communicate through various types of visual narratives. I also had the pleasure of wandering down memory lane (which has some very big trees!) while visiting my the campus of The Evergreen State College, my alma mater.

Signal Fire's recent wilderness residency in the Opal Creek Wilderness was an amazing success. I co-led and organized the trip. See some more photos here.

Summer WILL come eventually, and once it does, I'll be co-leading this backpacking trip with Signal Fire, invitingly titled The Love Triangle, June 13 -19, 2011.

You can apply online here; applications are due April 1.

Following up last year's successful trip to the Wallowas, we will be offering another backpacking retreat. This summer we will connect three of Oregon's most beloved places (hence the name...) in week-long trip. We will begin at the iconic Bagby Hot Springs, hike through the Bull of the Woods Wilderness and into the contiguous Opal Creek Wilderness. We will rest at the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, gathering with local forest activists and scientists to learn about the prehistoric stands of old growth. We will then continue onto the world-renowned Breitenbush Hot Springs to once again soak in some of Oregon's best hot springs. Staying a night at Breitenbush will be optional. The trip will be offered at-cost.

Find out more about Signal Fire and what we do.

Lots going on for me on October 2nd.

My work will be included in the first ever SHARE show.

And a journal that I made will be part of the annual Write Around Portland X Y & Z benefit. The journal is on display at Design Within Reach if you'd like to check it out.

Both of these organizations are vital, vibrant facets of the Portland community. Please come out and support them!

A hearty congratulations to Sally Jablonsky, one of my uber-talented students at PNCA. She created this poster for one of our class projects, and it was selected from thousands of entries as one of the winners of the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition show. This is a definitive collection of the best student illustration work in the country.

The assignment was to "create an image for any organization whose mission you support" -- and Sally created this poster for an organization she not only supports but directs. Yes, the Try Harder Society. I'm a proud card-carrying member, and Sally's work is a testament to what can happen when you do so!
